I remember when I bought my first property and my husband and I were sitting across the table from the sales agent talking contract terms and conditions.
Every time my husband objected to something the agent said in the negotiation, I would kick him under the table, giving him the unequivocal, “Shut the hell up, I really love this house and don’t want you to blow it” signal.
Needless to say, I was operating from an emotional standpoint, not a rational one. I was also lacking understanding about the sales process. I didn’t really understand that the agent was there to get the very best deal for his client – the seller – and was not at all concerned about what was best for us, the buyers. Of course, my husband was there to advocate for us and it probably would have been a lot better for all concerned if I had not been in the room!
That was a decade ago and luckily my efforts didn’t derail the purchase – and we’ve been very happy in our home ever since, raising three children and now a Border Collie puppy.
Since then I’ve learned a LOT about real estate and the property purchase process, most of it through my role at the REIQ.
I know a lot more about how to identify a great buying opportunity, how to make an offer, how to finance the purchase and what to look out for in basic contracts.
The REIQ has been a great teacher and every year we open our doors and welcome the public for a half-day educational session on how to buy your first property or your first investment property.
Last weekend, after many successful years of hosting sessions in Brisbane, we took the event to the Gold Coast.
More than 100 keen property purchasers joined us for an entertaining, informative seminar, learning different ways to structure your mortgage, some tips in contract law, how to use data to research your next purchase and a market snapshot on what the Gold Coast market is doing, whether you’re an owner-occupier or an investor.
One of the reasons these sessions are so popular is that we bring together undisputed experts who can speak with authority. They share all the latest information and give their insights and best tips for how to make sure you make the best property purchase.
Speakers and topics included:
- REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella: The Checklist To Buying a Home
- CoreLogic’s Kylie Davis: Using Data to Research Your Next Property Purchase
- St George’s Phil Soper: How To Finance Your First Home
- PEXA’s Rukshana Sashankan: Property Settlements Go Digital With PEXA
- St Geroge’s Wayne Lashman: How to Finance Your Investment Purchase
- REIQ Media and Comms Manager Felicity Moore: Gold Coast Property Market Overview
These sessions are always popular. They are very casual, with lots of opportunities for every question to be answered. The feedback we get from attendees at these seminars is always very positive.
If you’re interested in learning more about buying property, either as an investor or as a first-home buyer, then consider coming along to our next buyer’s seminar. Bookings are ESSENTIAL because we fill to capacity fast.
Our next Property Buyer’s Seminar is November 18 in Brisbane. Don’t miss out. If you’re thinking of buying come along, or you may know someone who is thinking of buying. Help them be informed by sharing this event with them.
